New Working Group: WG on MATNWB

16 March 2022

This working group serves the developers and users of MatNWB, the MATLAB interface to the INCF-endorsed Neurodata without Borders (NWB) data standard

Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) is a broad initiative aiming to standardize neuroscience data and to remove barriers to data sharing among neuroscientists. NWB: Neurophysiology was the initiative’s first outcome - their goal was  to develop a unified, extensible, open-source data format for cellular-based neurophysiology data. The results, NWB:N 2.0, has been endorsed as an INCF standard in 2020.

NWB is a data standard for neurophysiology, providing neuroscientists with a common standard to share, archive, use, and build analysis tools for neurophysiology data. It uses the HDF5 format and is designed to store a variety of neurophysiology data, including data from intracellular and extracellular electrophysiology experiments, data from optical physiology experiments, and tracking and stimulus data.

The goal of the MatNWB Working Group is to support the re-use of neurophysiology data via NWB by collecting MATLAB user requirements, outreaching to the wider MATLAB user community, coordinating among development teams (MatNWB, core NWB, MathWorks), identifying community project and collaboration opportunities, and other activities as may be determined.

Working Group members include representatives from the NWB development team, MBF Bioscience and MathWorks.
