Adopt a Neuron

The Neuron Registry Task Force has launched the "Adopt a Neuron" campaign, aiming to provide and enhance a "crowd-sourced" machine-readable resource of neuron type definitions.

Being able to classify neurons has been recognized as an important way to better understand the nervous system and construct statistical representations of neuronal cell types. To meet this need, the INCF Neuron Registry Task Force has put a structure into place for describing and quantifying existing cell types, the Neuron Registry.

The goal for the Neuron Registry is an open access resource for comparing potentially new neuronal types with known types and for constructing statistical representations of neuronal cell types based on known instances.  A well-populated resource such as this would greatly enhance the ability to compare and group neurons as well as build multiscale models of the nervous system.

We are now asking domain experts to enter their knowledge of neuronal properties in the Neuron Registry through our “Adopt a Neuron” campaign: an open invitation to the entire neuroscience community for (self-)nominations of neuron type curators. Submissions of neuron types are encouraged from any species and brain region. Every property must be accompanied by a relevant literature citation and will be peer-reviewed. Information entry will occur through the Neuron Registry Curator Interface, and participants will need a Google Account to log in.

Interested participants are asked to nominate themselves by sending an email to adopt.a.neuron@incf.org.
